Tuesday, August 9, 2011, is the start of a new session at Support Works Job Readiness Training.  This program is provided by Elk Grove Food Bank Services and sponsored by the City of Elk Grove.  The program is designed to help clients with their job hunting effort with proven methods presented by Human Resource experts.  Classes for Job Readiness Training are held on Tuesdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; and individual assistance is available by appointment from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon. 

Job Readiness Training provides participants with resume assistance, guest speakers, mock interviews and access to exclusive job postings.  Our volunteers have experience in Human Resources sector and bring with them successful methods and techniques to use in your job search.

The Cosumnes Community Services District (CSD) and Sacramento’s Laughs Unlimited bring laughter indoors for a special one night Elk Grove comedy performance on Friday, March 2, at Laguna Town Hall (3020 Renwick Avenue).

The LOL (Laugh Out Loud) comedy show piggybacks on the success of the CSD’s Comedy Under the Stars series, offering Elk Grove a local outlet for laughter in the winter.

Comedian Sam Bam, will headline the night.  Sam grew up in Stockton, CA and remembers always being a good story teller.  His comedy stardom began in San Francisco and has also been seen nationally on BET’s Comic View.  Joining Sam will be the diverse comedy talents of Anthony Padilla, Jimmy Earl, and Angela Diaz.

Proceeds from the show benefit the Cosumnes Legacy Foundation, an independent 501 (c) (3) nonprofit foundation that supports local parks and recreation and fire safety programs and projects.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.  This show is for adults 21 and older.  Refreshments are available for purchase.  No outside food or beverages are permitted.  Seating opens at 7:00 pm.  Show starts at 8:00 pm.

With a few special seeds and tips from those who know best, you could grow a GIANT pumpkin just like the pros. 

Award-winning growers from throughout California will share their strategies on growing giant pumpkins at the annual California Giant Pumpkin Growers’ Forum on Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pavilion in Elk Grove Regional Park, 9950 Elk Grove-Florin Road.

The grower’s forum is open to the public and will include a question-and-answer session, a catered lunch, seed swap, seed raffle, seed auction and prize raffle.

This year’s guest speaker will be the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC) Grower of the Year, Leonardo Urena.  Leonardo hauled in the heftiest pumpkin at the 2011 CSD Giant Pumpkin Festival of Elk Grove -- a whopping 1,684.5 lbs.  He also set a new California record with a 1,704 lb. pumpkin at Half Moon Bay’s competition.

Admission to the growers’ forum is $20 in advance and $30 at the door. Online registration is available at www.yourcsd.com, over the phone or in person at any of CSD’s three registration offices.
